The Commune of Bikok is one of 4 communes in the Mefou-et-Akono department in the Centre region. The Commune was created on 13 May 1959 by law n°59/19, and today covers an area of around 1200 km², with an estimated population of around 22,000, giving an average density of around 18 inhabitants per km². Its coordinates are 3.640000°N and 11.530000°E.
The Commune of Bikok is bounded: to the north by the Communes of Yaoundé III and Mbankomo; to the south by the River Nyong and the Commune of Mbalmayo; to the east by the Commune of Akono; to the west by the Commune of Ngoumou.
The town of Bikok is located approximately 60 km from the capital of the Centre Region (Yaoundé). The town's strategic location lies in the fact that it is in a transition zone between the dense equatorial forest of Central-South Cameroon and the more open plateaux of the interior. Although it is not a border town, Bikok is an important local crossroads for trade between Yaoundé, Mbalmayo, Akono and the surrounding rural villages.
The Commune of Bikok is built on a plateau with a moderate relief, characterised by lush vegetation and an average altitude of around 700 metres.
Bikok Council is responsible for :
1° Basic education: Participation in the maintenance and administration of basic education establishments;
2° Vocational training: Participation in the maintenance and administration of vocational training centres ;
3° Urban planning and roads: Urban planning, creation and maintenance of earth roads;
4° Tourism: Development and operation of tourist sites of local interest;
5° Leisure and holidays: Organisation of holiday activities ;
6° Public health: Participation in the management of basic health centres;
7° Rural development: Promoting local rural and agricultural development ;
8° Environment : Environmental protection and waste management ;
9° Social action: Social aid and assistance for vulnerable groups ;
10° Local economic development: Promotion of local economic activities.
